Monthly Feature: Physical Health

Maintaining good physical health allows our minds and bodies to function optimally, so we can more fully enjoy life. Proper diet and nutrition, exercise, and abstinence from harmful substances keep us healthy physically and more sensitive to the promptings of the Spirit. Not only does attention to physical health make it more likely that we will have productive and meaningful lives, it also makes possible the physical, mental, and spiritual vitality necessary to offer worthwhile service to the Lord. When we keep our physical bodies in good condition, we become more useful to the Lord as servants in His kingdom.

"The Word of Wisdom does not promise you perfect health, but it teaches how to keep the body you were born with in the best condition and your mind alert to delicate spiritual promptings."

—Boyd K. Packer, "The Word of Wisdom: The Principle and the Promises,Ensign, May 1996, 18

There are basic principles of health and fitness that you can practice in your home:

  • Enjoy physical activities together as a family. Biking, hiking, swimming, walking, tennis, and skiing are examples of activities that draw the family together as they strengthen the body and help children to develop skills that will enhance their lifestyles.
  • Plan family meals and snacks with care. Serve foods that are rich in nutrients and low in sugar and fat. Avoid stocking the cupboards and refrigerator with unhealthy foods; instead, keep fresh fruits, vegetables, whole-wheat crackers, raisins, and pretzels handy as convenient snacks. Learn more about promoting a healthy attitude toward food in your home in Ronald L. Rhodes's article "Don't Eat Your Heart Out," Ensign, Oct. 1975, 72–74.
  • Get plenty of sleep. Young children may require as many as 12 hours of sleep a night. Adults need between 7 and 8 hours of sleep every night.
  • Cut back on the time you spend watching television and encourage your children to do the same. Not only does excessive television viewing lead to a sedentary lifestyle, it is often accompanied by unhealthy snacking. Turn the TV off and enjoy an activity outdoors. Or play a game as a family inside.
  • Make sure that all family members are current on their immunizations.
